Low Flow, High Pressure Mini-Flowmeter Application for the Chemical Industry
When a chemical company based in Freeport, Texas, came to us to discuss their low-flow, very high-pressure flowmeter application, we were ready to meet the challenge. The application was for metering supercritical ethylene over a flow range of .023 to .2 GPM and with operating pressures to 60,000 PSI.
Chemical companies commonly transform ethylene into chemical compounds, which manufacturers use to produce many of the in-demand products relied upon in everyday life. Ethylene compounds such as polyethylene make plastics. Other ethylene compounds are used to make antifreeze. The vast use of ethylene is what makes it the “World’s Most Important Chemical.”
The flow range needed by this customer is readily available with the use of one of our Mini-flowmeter turbine meters from our MF Series. The MF Series includes twelve (12) different size flow meters for obtaining flow rates from .007 to 3.5 GPM. The standard Mini-Flowmeter has a working pressure rating of 1,000 PSI.
This customer needed a flow meter designed for 60,000 PSI MAWP. We redesigned the flow meter housing and used 3/8” autoclave end connections to meet this very high-pressure requirement. The redesign of the meter housing increased the weight of the flow meter substantially. We incorporated a bracket assembly of the flow meter housing to secure the meter to the customer’s piping system.
